30 Minutes With...

...Scott Drew, owner, David’s Fish & Chips, Brixham, Devon

You’ve been given £500,000 to spend on your business. You can spend it on anything but it must be a unique or new idea. What would you do and why?
It’s quite unique although I’m not sure it’s a new idea, but I would like to bring fish and chips more up-to-date and have a drive-through. I mean, in America they even have drive through cashpoint machines!

How did you get into the industry?
After tiring of getting up early in the mornings and getting wet delivering the morning’s newspapers, I approached a fish and  chip shop down the road from where I lived called David’s. The owner had just taken over the business a week earlier and was looking for staff. I applied at the age of 14 and got the job out the back peeling potatoes. I was so thrilled at getting £1.15 an hour compared to 1p per newspaper delivered, I thought I'd won the lottery! My boss, David and his wife Phyliss, always promised me first refusal on the shop when they retired and this happened eight years ago, meaning I have been at the shop for a little over 30 years!

If you could change jobs with anyone else for the day who would it be?
Not technically a job, but I would love to spend a day in the jungle with the contestants of "I'm a Celebrity”. This year’s line-up has been so much fun with great characters. I think I could just about manage a day, not three weeks though, especially with all those cockroaches!

What’s your favourite film?
Avatar for me, more so since earlier this year I went to Disney World, Florida, where they have recently opened Pandora Land, and they have a ride called "Flight of Passage”. It really is out of this world. If anyone is visiting Disney this is the one ride you must do!

What was the first music single you bought?
It was back in the day when you could pop down to your local record store and it was Eddie Grants "Electric Avenue”. I was nine and I saved up my pocket money.

Do you have a nickname?
For some reason I have a few, depending on who you ask! Dr Drew, I do not know where this originally came from but I  still get called it, and Daddy Drew as I am older than my friends so they always refer to me as this, and Fryer Tuck for obvious reasons!

What did you want to be as a child?
I always wanted to work in the police. It’s certainly a tough job in this day and age.

If you could have anyone join your team who would it be?
Mo Farah, if he's quick on his feet I would imagine he's quick with his hands, so on a busy Friday night it would be very useful having him working for us, wrapping up fish and chips!

What’s your favourite food?
Apart from fish and chips it has to be Chinese for me. I cook this quite a bit at home using Middleton’s Spicy Curry Sauce. My friends absolutely love it, so much so that I have a waiting list!

What sports team do you support?
I have never been into sports, unfortunately, but I do watch national games like the World Cup.

If you could meet anyone in the world, dead or alive, who would it be and what would you ask them?
Cliff Richard. I get a lot of stick from my friends for this, but I have watched him live in concert around 50 times yet never had the chance to meet him properly. I would ask what drives him to keep going in the same career for 60 years. I have only done fish and chips for half this amount of time and I still love it so I guess it’s something similar.

If you were Prime Minister for a day what’s the first thing you would do?
Reduce all the managers in the NHS and replace them with much-needed doctors and nurses. We need more people on the ground not more at the top telling them what they already know they need to do.

If you could go back in time what year would you choose?
Do I have to go back in time? I want to go forward in time! We already know what's happened in the past, so I want to go into the future to 2050 so I can report back on what it’s like!

Do you have any hobbies?
I love watching live concerts and shows (not just Cliff), walking, going to the cinema and spending time with my cousin’s children. We always have great fun together and this Christmas I am taking them to Lapland for the day, which will be their first flight. I’m not sure who’s more excited - me or them!

What question would you like to ask our next “30 minutes with”
If you could charge any price for fish and chips what would you say is a fair price, and what size portion would you consider reasonable?

Making a million

Located at the gateway to some of Scotland’s top outdoor destinations, The Real Food Cafe should be a seasonal business. However, by marketing to new groups of potential customers, winning awards and investing back, owner Sarah Heward has created a fish and chip business that is busy all-year with a turnover approaching £1.5 million
