Unique sponsors Chippy Challenge to set new Guinness World Record

Fish supplier Unique Seafood is sponsoring a Guinness World Record attempt by two fish and chip shop owners to open the world’s highest pop-up chippy.

Malachy Mallon from Dolphin Takeaway in Dungannon, County Tyrone, and Alan Hanna from Pitstop Fast Food in Kilkeel, County Down, plan to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa, in September after which they will both fry and serve MSC certified source Granit Norwegian fish and chips at Barafu Camp – a dizzying 15,255ft (4,650 metres) above sea level.

The "Chippy Challenge" as it has been named will set a new Guinness World Record for the highest pop-up fish and chip shop.

The intrepid duo will arrive in Tanzania on 1st September and take on their world record attempt between 3rd-10th September 2018, a climb of eight days. The pair will be raising funds for The Fishermen’s Mission as they go.

Malachy, who came up with the idea last year, comments: “As a keen outdoors enthusiast, and following on the success of my #MalOnAMission cycle, I felt it would be great to put fish and chips on top of the world stage by attempting to climb Mount Kilimanjaro and cook fish and chips at Barafu Camp. Alan and I hope to become the world’s highest pop-up fish and chip shop and, by doing so, raise funds for the worthy Fishermen’s Mission, whilst also promoting the healthier eating aspects of fish and chips. We intend to, signal permitting, broadcast live from Kilimanjaro and hopefully we’ll be celebrating a new world record! Post climb, we’re also planning to cook fish and chips for a local orphanage. It’s good to give back to the community, wherever you are in the world.”

Alan Hanna adds: “When Malachy suggested climbing Kilimanjaro I really thought he was joking. But no, he was serious.” Malachy is no stranger to challenges.

Last summer, as part of a charitable fundraising challenge, he cycled 1,500 miles visiting the UK’s top 10 fish and chip shops, raising £9,000 for The Fishermen’s Mission.

For anyone wishing to sponsor Malachy and Alan, a JustGiving page has been set up.
