30 Minutes With….

…Scott Turner, Scott’s Plaice, Gosport, Hampshire

If you could have a fish and chip shop anywhere in the world where  would it be?

For me it would have to be Las Vegas and the reason being it’s truly a city that does not sleep! I like all the fancy casinos and would love to wake up to that every day. Also I’d like to give Gordon Ramsay’s fish and chip shop some good competition.

How did you get into the industry?

I first started at 12 years old, making the chips and cleaning in our local chip shop, J Henry’s in Hedge End. After a short time, I started serving customers which I really enjoyed as I love to chat! Around the age of 15 I started learning more about the frying side, which I found to be fantastic and rewarding as there’s no greater feeling than preparing and cooking someone’s food which they enjoy and truly love. After another year I decided I wanted to try something different and started work at a tyre supplier. Although I enjoyed it, I soon missed fish and chips so started doing a couple of evenings back at the chippy. After six months of this, I had to give up the tyre job and get back into the chippy full time. As of December last year, I managed to open my own shop, Scott’s Plaice.

If you could change jobs with anyone else for the day who would it be?

I think it would have to be Johnny Depp. How amazing it would be to be in Pirates of the Caribbean!

What’s your favourite film?

The Bodyguard, a childhood film I remember watching over and over again. I think I’ve seen it over 150 times!

What did you want to be as a child?

I really wanted to be a limo driver, I can only imagine that it was the long limos that made me want to be one.

If you could have anyone join your team who would it be?

I know a lot of people say it, but it would be Gordon Ramsay. I just love his passion and his attitude, I think you wouldn’t have any problems with staff after he screamed at them!

What’s your favourite food?

It has to be a roast dinner with gammon and all the trimmings because it’s so tasty and filling! But I do still eat a lot of fish and chips as I enjoy it so much.

If you could meet anyone in the world, dead or alive, who would it be and what would you ask them?

Walt Disney, he seems such a legend. I’d like to see what he was really like and I would ask him how did the dream begin?

If you were Prime Minister for a day what’s the first thing you would do?

Make it the law to eat fish and chips every Friday!

If you could go back in time what year would you choose?

The 1950s as its when the Kray twins were around. I am very interested in the history of the Krays so to actually have been there would have been an experience!

Do you have any hobbies?

I enjoy the occasional round of golf, like to watch films and enjoy eating out.

What question would you like to ask our next “30 minutes with”?

Where do you see the fish and chip industry in the next 10 years?
