30 Minutes With…

...Rogerio Victor Figueira, owner, Lowford Fish Bar, Southampton, Hampshire

What are your thoughts on high potato prices this year? Do you expect prices to come back down to what they once were? And what have you done to deal with the price increase?

Due to the weather changes this year the potatoes are not the best quality considering the price that we are currently paying. I don’t expect the prices to be dropping anywhere in the near future, We have reduced wastage by cooking fewer portions where possible and have increased our prices per portion to which our customers are fully understanding about.

How did you get into the industry?

I started working in fish and chips 17 years ago when I got my first job at 18 years old. I worked for the same employer for 12 years and progressed through my years becoming responsible for much of the day-to-day running and managing of the shop. The opportunity came up a few times over the years for me to purchase the business and I finally took the plunge two years ago. I haven’t looked back since.

If you could change jobs with anyone else for the day who would it be?

A crime scene investigator because I love the scene of mystery and investigating forensic science.

What’s your favourite film?

It’s rare I get the opportunity to watch a film with the hours worked, but I have realised the main thing about a good movie is having good company to enjoy it with. So I make the most of any opportunity to sit down with my partner to watch a movie - even if she falls asleep!

What was the first music single you bought?

BAD by Michael Jackson. I have enjoyed his music since an early age and still enjoy it to this day.

Do you have a nickname?

I don’t although I did have the nickname Mario many years ago for my gaming skills.

What did you want to be as a child?

My childhood dreams of what I wanted to do were endless, I wanted to be a firefighter and I went on to become a volunteer firefighter at around 17 years old in my home country, Madeira, before moving to England. I also wanted to be a baker, a plumber and a mechanic.

If you could have anyone join your team?

Gordon Ramsay because I love his attitude and I think it would be a very knowledgeable experience.

What’s your favourite food?

Anything with rice. It was part of my childhood as we ate it with most meals.

What sports team do you support?

I’m not that big into sports but my football team is the Portuguese team, Porto. I have supported them since a child.

If you could meet anyone in the world, dead or alive, who would it be and what would you ask them?

I would love to meet Bruce Lee and I would ask him to be my mentor.

If you were Prime Minister for a day what’s the first thing you would do?

I would invest in our younger generation with more funding for training and education.

If you could go back in time what year would you choose?

A sentimental one for me, 1984 so I could see my father before he passed away.

Do you have any hobbies?

I don’t get much time for hobbies but, when I do, I enjoy spending time with my family and gaming. I love all the old retro games and playing more recent ones with my brother who lives in Madeira.

What question would you like to ask our next “30 minutes with”?

If you started reading a book and realised it was about your own life, would you read until the end?
