30 Minutes With…

Updated: Mar 13, 2019

Tony Forgione, owner of Captain’s Fish & Chips, Hoddesdon, Hertfordshire

If you started reading a book and realised it was about your own life, would you read until the end?

No, just in case I didn’t like the ending.

How did you get into the industry?

I was born into it. My mum and dad started in their first shop in 1963 so my siblings and I were seen as cheap labour and we were put to work after school and every school holiday.

If you could change jobs with anyone else for the day who would it be?

Sir David Attenborough so I could see nature’s greatest moments.

What’s your favourite film?

I like films based on true events and history so films like ‘The Pianist’ and ‘Schindler’s List’ are great thought-provoking films. By watching these films we must make sure history doesn’t repeat itself.

What was the first music single you bought?

The first song I ever purchased was Band Aid’s 1985 song Do They Know it’s Christmas.

Great song for a great cause, brought from my local Woolworths.

Do you have a nickname?

No, I haven’t but my real name is actually Antonio and everyone calls me Tony.

I also get called ‘The Captain’ because of the shop’s name.

What did you want to be as a child?

When I was growing up I used to play in goal for my school’s football team and I quite fancied being Liverpool’s number one goalie.

If you could have anyone join your team who would it be?

‘Del Boy’ because this time next year we’ll be millionaires. Hehehe!

What’s your favourite food?

When it comes to food I’m not fussy and will give all foods a try but if I had to choose a favourite it would be a good old curry - tandoori king prawn madras, extra hot!

What sports team do you support?

Liverpool Football Club is my team and the reason being is that I have two older brothers who supported them and I just followed in their footsteps. ‘You’ll never walk alone LFC’.

If you could meet anyone in the world, dead or alive, who would it be and what would you ask them?

I would want to meet Lee Harvey Oswald and ask him if he actually shot JFK.

If you were Prime Minister for a day what’s the first thing you would do?

I would push through Brexit (even though I was remainer) so the country can get on with life, move forward and get rid of all the uncertainty it has caused.

If you could go back in time what year would you choose?

I wouldn’t choose a specific year I would choose the 1960s because I feel there were many business opportunities available, great music, fashion and the birth of my favourite car, the E-Type Jaguar.

Do you have any hobbies?

I love to travel and see different places all over the world. I enjoy cruising because I get to eat good food, drink nice wine and see some amazing places.

What question would you like to ask our next “30 minutes with”?

If you were having a dinner party which five guests would you invite and why?
