Absolute Radio on chip shop tour

A national radio station embarking on a tour of the UK’s best chippies has received over 1,500 nominations for shops to stop at.

Andy Bush and Richie Firth from Absolute Radio’s Drive Time Show will head out on their Hometime Chip Shop Tour on Monday 18th March. To help decide where their tour will take them, the pair have been asking listeners to vote for their favourite chippy and state why they deserve the title of Hometime Chip Shop Tour winner 2019. Is it their triple cooked chips? The extra lashings of gravy? Or maybe the show-stopping seaside location?

The duo will visit the five shops with the most votes where they will feast on a fillet of fish, chow down on a portion of chips and try out the tartare sauce. They’ve even come up with their own humorous formula to decide upon the winning shop called the Chip Index, which involves marking the quality of fish and chips out of ten, as well as giving points for the condiments on offer, how punny the shop name is and any famous faces through the doors.

The station’s social media sites have been flooded with suggestions from listeners, putting forward shops including Mario’s in Deal, Kent, The Nook Fish & Chip Shop in Cosby, Leicestershire, and Longsands Fish Kitchen in Tynemouth, North Shields.

It’s not only the stops on the tour which the DJs have put in the hands of its listeners but also the bumper sticker on a specially branded SUV which will take the pair across the UK. Suggestions so far include “Dukes of haddock”, “Back to my plaice”, “Chippy Chippy Bang Bang”, and “Hometime, nobody does it batter”.

The tour is being held in conjunction with Essex-based sea salt maker Maldon Salt.
