Angel Lane Chippie in Penrith, Cumbria, has earned MSC certification across three species of fish on its menu - cod, haddock, and hake.
The takeaway can now use the MSC blue fish label on the menu, assuring customers its fish is traceable back through the supply chain – from certified sustainable boats to the final point of sale in their shop.
The shop has been in the hands of Daniel Harding and his dad Dave since December 2007, although according to the deeds for the property it became a fish and chip shop in June 1928 and it is believed to be Penrith’s longest established chippy. Since taking ownership, the father and son duo has seen the business win a host of awards and is in the running for Independent Fish & Chip Shop of the Year at the 2019 Fish & Chip Awards.
Daniel comments: “We decided to become MSC certified as we know the importance of having enough fish today and preserving the quantities and health of fish stocks for the future. We believe that by becoming part of the MSC programme we are doing our bit to help the ocean. We are very pleased to have met the strict criteria and are now providing a 100% traceable and certified product to our customers.”
Angel Lane is one of the many chippies taking advantage of a partnership between MSC and the NFFF which enables shops to qualify for the Quality Award and MSC certification together, thereby reducing the cost and administrative burden.
