Chippy rises from the ashes with MSC certification

An Aberdeen fish and chip shop which suffered a devastating fire has come back fighting, having achieved MSC certification just months after reopening.

Sea, Salt and Sole was forced to close in November 2015 but opened its doors again in March 2017 after owners Rikki and Gillian Piri rebuilt the business. As well as providing an opportunity to modernise the chippy, it also gave the pair the chance to demonstrate their commitment to sustainability by applying for MSC certification.

Gaining accreditation means that Sea, Salt and Sole takeaway can now use the MSC blue fish label on its cod and haddock, assuring customers that the fish sold has been responsibly caught using sustainable methods. It also means it can be traced back to the fishermen who caught it.

Rikki and Gillian Piri said: “We value our products and where they come from, so the sustainability of the fish we use is extremely important to us. Gaining the certification demonstrates Sea Salt and Sole are committed to only using fish from sustainable sources.  Our electronic menu boards show the species of fish we have an offer and which trawler it was caught on. We also have MSC leaflets available to customers to who want to learn more about MSC. We’re delighted to be part of the great work that the MSC organisation does.”

Loren Hiller, commercial officer at the MSC, said: “It’s such a huge achievement for Sea, Salt and Sole getting MSC certified. Offering their customers the blue fish label makes a massive impact on our ocean health and ensures fish for future generations. We’re delighted to have them on board, and more chippies should follow in their footsteps!"
