Chippy tea ranks third in Britain’s Favourite Takeaway

Fish and chips has been ranked Britain’s third favourite takeaway in the Channel 5 TV series ‘Britain’s Favourite’.

Channel 5 took viewers on a magical mystery takeaway tour across the UK, asking the opinions of thousands of fast food fanatics from the East End of London to North Tyneside.

Chinese topped the poll after securing nearly a quarter of the votes, with Indian takeaway coming second, followed by fish and chips, which was described as the “food of champions”.

Pizza finished fourth while burgers took fifth place.

Fried chicken and kebabs also made it into the top ten takeaways as did sausage and chips, which ranked ninth.

A host of celebrities took part in the countdown, including Vanessa Feltz, Jenny Powell and Phil Tufnell, who discussed the merits of the chippy tea, whether it's choosing cod, haddock or plaice to scraps, vinegar and mushy peas.

The two-hour documentary went behind the scenes to explain the history of our favourite takeaways as well as what Brits gorge on and how they order.
