The Cod’s Scallops in Wollaton, Nottingham, has won another award, this time for its pies.
The shop’s Chicken, Ham and Leek Pie was been awarded class champion in the Fish & Chip Shop Pie category at the British Pie Awards held in Melton Mowbray last week.
Judges gave the pie top marks with comments including “great bake”, “lovely flavour”, and “nice pastry”.
Made with pastry created to a recipe bespoke to The Cod’s Scallops, which includes extra butter, the pie is filled with home-cooked, locally sourced chicken, gammon and leaks, and a touch of cream.
The award-winning pie is on the menu at £3.20 in the takeaway and £8.50 in the restaurant with chips and gravy.
Owner John Molnar comments: “We’re so pleased to win another award for our pies. Last year we won with our Steak and Ale Pie so two out of our three pies on the menu are now award-winning.
“We make our pies upstairs in the development kitchen and a lot of time and effort has gone into getting them right.
“We get people asking us ‘do we have fish or pie?’ and we say either because they are both equally good. It’s a hard decision because the pies are such good pies. They’re full of meat or chicken chunks, they’re full to the brim, the steak one is made with our own ale and the chicken is finished with cream. They’re just as good as anything else we sell.
“Someone said to me recently we are on a bit of a roll and we are, and long may it continue!”
The British Pie Awards saw close to 900 pies entered by 160 professional bakers, butchers and chefs from around the country.
Top Rump Steak & Stilton Pie, made by family-run bakery Turner’s Pies, triumphed as the overall Best British Pie of 2020.
