Government puts £100m behind Covid fraud taskforce

A new taskforce is being set up to investigate and prosecute Covid fraudsters who have exploited government schemes designed to help protect businesses and jobs during the pandemic.

Revealed in today’s Budget, the Taxpayer Protection Taskforce is backed by £100m of government money and will see a team of more than 1,250 HMRC officials investigate those who have submitted fraudulent claims through the furlough and the Self Employed Income Support schemes as well as Eat Out to Help Out and Bounce Back Loans.

HMRC currently has around 10,000 open inquiries into suspected Covid fraud and some criminal investigations are underway.

The chancellor also announced there will be new measures and investment to clamp down on tax avoidance and evasion.
