Hanbury’s introduces home brew

A popular Devon fish and chip shop has set up a minimicro brewery on site to produce its very own ale.

Hanbury's Famous Fish and Chips in Babbacombe is producing 35 litre batches of Hanbury's 4.7% Amber Ale at a time. The homemade tipple is on sale in the restaurant and takeaway both in bottles and on draft.

The bottled ale feature labels designed by local artist Liz Jones who has created placemats, fridge magnets and wall paintings for the chippy which depict images of Babbacombe Downs.

Owner David Hanbury comments: “We are delighted to have our very own ale. My son, Stephen, was keen for us to try brewing some ale. It has been a great project for us to work on together and the finished article is delicious. We wanted to create a tasty beer in its own right but, as you might expect, something that worked perfectly with fish and chips. We believe we've done exactly that.”

A brand new drinks fridge has been installed in the takeaway to prompt purchases of its bottled ale.

David adds: “I've been in business in Babbacombe for the past 36 years.  It's a great place to live and work and I've always believed in introducing new ideas and developing the business wherever possible. This new venture is exciting for all the team and one we are hoping our customers will approve of and, indeed, enjoy.”

The team is hoping to follow its ale with a Hanbury's lager.
