Hennighan’s asks for help to boost Ruby Anniversary fundraiser

A Welsh fish and chip shop preparing to celebrate its 40th anniversary is appealing for help in raising more than £8,000 for a local cancer charity.

Hennighan’s Top Shop in Machynlleth, which opened on the 21st June 1982, is looking for prizes for customers to win in its Ruby Anniversary Scratch Card game.

The chippy hopes to print 5,000 cards to sell at £2 each. After costs it is estimated that the initiative will raise approximately £8,750, with all proceeds going to the new Chemotherapy Unit being planned for Bronglais Hospital in nearby Aberystwyth.

Hennighan’s is putting up a number of prizes itself, including free fish and chips once a week for a year, but hopes local businesses and suppliers will come forward to support their fundraiser.

Jemma Hennighan, granddaughter of the original owner Mr Hennighan Snr, says: “We are approaching all suppliers, local shops, and local attractions to ask if they would be able to donate a prize for this little fundraiser.

“Local attractions could offer experience days out, a meal, or a gift from their shop, and local businesses could perhaps also sponsor experience days out, a weekend away somewhere beautiful or products that they sell.”

Hennighan’s has a number of events planned to mark its 40th anniversary including selling fish and chips for just £1 on Saturday 25th June - the closest weekend to the shop’s opening day 40 years ago.

The team hopes to launch the scratch cards at the beginning of June and therefore anyone who would like to donate a prize should e-mail or contact Jemma on 07977271899 or via social media by Sunday 10th April.
