Loving life

We catch up with Lauren Kellaway as she approaches the halfway point in her action-packed year as Drywite Young Fish Frier

Wow! What an amazing few months! I can’t believe how much my life has changed since winning Drywite Young Fish Frier of the Year, how many opportunities have opened up and the great experiences I have had within this brilliant industry.

I’ve been to many trade shows all over the country. I’ve found that they are a great place to network and learn from many others within the industry. Most importantly, it’s given me the chance to work alongside Drywite to promote the competition and talk about the benefits being a part of the competition can bring to your career and your shop.

I loved being a part of the Drywite Young Fish Frier of the Year 2020 Introduction Day and Best Practice Day. These training days at the NFFF give young friers a wider understanding of all the stages in the competition and a chance for them to ask any questions they might have. It’s also a great place to meet other young friers from all over the country who then, in turn, become great friends.

In April, I was invited by my fellow young frier finalist and friend James Workman to work at Miller’s in Haxby for a day. It was a brilliant opportunity and great to see the operation of an award-winning shop and team that has been such an inspiration for me and many across the country.

I’ve also had the privilege of being a guest frier on one of the NFFF three-day training courses, meeting other new friers who are joining the industry and looking to take over a new venture. This was a great experience although peculiar to be on the other side as a guest frier rather than being a trainee, as I did the three-day course a few years back!

I’ve been very lucky to be asked to be an ambassador for two brands within the industry too - Middleton Foods, a company we have personally used in our business for at least 15 years, and also for a brand of high-quality beef dripping called Q Toreno made by Duncrue Food Processors. We personally use these products in our shop and have found them to meet the demands of our customers.

More recently, I’ve been busy in the shop developing some new promotional videos and reinventing our new menu, along with our social media presence. I literally cannot believe it’s June already! Everyone said the year will fly by and it certainly is, but I’m loving every minute of it!
