Millers makes it another Florigo

Millers, located in Haxby, York, is part of a long-standing family business going back 75 years and is currently run by father and son team David and Nick Miller.

Soon after taking over the shop from his father Jim in 1987, David replaced the existing frying range with a Florigo and doubled the shop’s turnover. When asked why he chose Florigo all those years ago, David said there was simply nothing else like it on the market at that time and so the Florigo range remained an integral part of the Millers family business for 27 years.

Joined in the business by son Nick in 2015, the pair have made some massive changes over the past 12 months, which include a shop refurbishment, the addition of a bistro evening as well as gluten free, halal and vegetarian options to the menu, and the introduction of a delivery service to local retirement homes and football clubs. Time has also been spent visiting schools in the area to educate children on sustainability, improving staff training and gaining MSC certification. 2016 was also the year that Millers took the world of social media by storm with over 1,600 followers on Facebook, more than 1,700 on Twitter and over 1,300 on Instagram, figures which are only sure to increase as the shop is more active online.

With trade increasing and having had a successful 27 years out of their range, it was time to look for a replacement. David and Nick considered multiple manufacturers but it was Florigo that came out on top once again. In November last year in went a new 5 pan high efficiency range complete with Active Triple Filtration system and finishing touches like Halo lighting and mirror doors.

David comments: “Obviously we had a history with Florigo, but that wasn’t the reason we chose them. The Florigo sits well in the shop. From the customer side, it looks the business. It’s solid, it has nice lines and everything about it just looks so subtle. From the friers side it’s very easy to use — although it looks complicated at first, it actually isn’t — and it’s a pleasure to fry on. It’s also the confidence it gives us because I know that if everything is right in terms of the fish, the potatoes and the batter, then it’s going to perform every time, which means we’ve got every chance of producing a very good product.”

Equally impressed with the triple filtration, David comments. “It’s just so quick and easy. The minute our oil starts looking a little dark, we run it through the filter and it comes back lovely and clean. It’s a top piece of kit.”

Further improvements to the business saw Millers go on to achieve multiple success at last month’s National Fish & Chip Awards as it was crowned regional winner for the North East of England and scooped third place in the Independent Takeaway Fish and Chip Shop Award.
