Since winning Best Independent Takeaway at the National Fish & Chip Awards last year, David and Nick Miller have taken every opportunity to get involved in the industry while ensuring they stay focused on growing their own business
With the National Fish and Chip Awards just over a month away, now seems like a great time to reflect on the incredible impact these awards have had on our business, our family and our staff before we hand over the trophy to the next worthy winners.
If you’re reading this and haven’t put your business forward to enter the awards, we hope sharing our experience will encourage to enter in 2020 – you have everything to gain and nothing to lose!
2018 has been our busiest year yet. The national attention we’ve received as a result of winning the award has been nothing short of phenomenal. After winning, we were invited onto ITV’s This Morning to cook fish and chips. As news of our victory spread online and in national newspapers, people have travelled from all over the UK and even from abroad to try our fish and chips. There’s nothing more rewarding than hearing someone has literally driven over four hours to try fish and chips. Proof in the pudding that fish and chips is truly the nation’s favourite dish!
Not a month has gone by when we haven’t been travelling around the country (or overseas!). We made a commitment to help and support as many shops as possible throughout the year and we’re proud to say that we have achieved our aims. As a trainer, and now director with the NFFF, David has travelled the length and breadth of the country visiting shops to give training and pass on his experience.
As well as visiting other shops, we have thrown our doors open to the industry by hosting open days at Millers. We were absolutely blown away by the popularity and response to the first session, so were more than happy to run another. Every one of us in the industry has knowledge to share, and we never stop learning, so we were delighted to host day-long sessions that facilitated these important discussions.
As a family and a team, we have also made sure that we have played our part in tackling some of the major challenges the industry faces by attending events, using our voice within the media and getting involved in several key projects and initiatives. One of these issues, the healthy eating agenda, saw us work with FASFA on the ‘Don’t be a Chippy Chucker’ campaign over the summer to raise awareness around the issue of portion control amongst consumers.
As commercial operators, we believe it’s more important than ever to keep an eye on portion control and to offer a lighter portion to customers. Not only does this show an awareness of the importance of offering healthier options, but it can also reduce wastage and protect your margins.
The pace certainly didn’t slow towards the end of the year, with our incredible trip to Japan in October, where we were proud to represent the UK fish and trip industry and serve over 10,000 portions of fish and chips! There were certainly memories made on the trip that we will always treasure.
So, as you can see, it’s been a really hectic year. Despite all of the travelling and the busy diaries, we have worked hard to make sure that we never lost focus on the shop, our team and our customers. This has meant that there hasn’t been a lot of time to kick back and relax – but we wouldn’t have it any other way!
On behalf of the Miller family and our whole team, we wish the next worthy winners of the National Fish and Chip Awards our warmest congratulations and all the very best wishes for what we will certainly be an incredible year.
