Two chip shops win at British Takeaway Awards

Two fish and chip shops were among the winners at this year’s British Takeaway Awards, (BTAs) sponsored by Just Eat.

The star-studded event, which took place last night at Old Billingsgate fish market, London, was hosted by comedian Paddy McGuinness and attended by celebrities including Daisy Lowe, Pixie Lott, Chris Kamara and John Barnes.

Chris’s Fish & Chips in Barwell, Leicester, won the accolade of Best Takeaway in East Midlands while Manny’s in Belfast took the title for Northern Ireland.

Churchill’s Fish & Chips narrowly missed out on Best Restaurant Chain, which was won by noodle bar Nuudle.

The overall winner of Best Takeaway in Britain went to Sheffield-based Sakushi Japanese, while two new awards for this year, the Good Deed Hero Award and New to Delivery Award, were awarded to British Raj Express in Royston, Hertfordshire, and Chickenish in Hackney, London, respectively.

For Strad Kyriacou, owner of Chris's Fish & Chips, it was his sixth BTA. Commenting on the win he said: "Every year it gets harder and the standards get higher.

"It's been a tough year, we put a lot of effort into working and getting through Covid and winning awards was the last thing on our minds, it was about doing the job right and doing the best work we can, so getting some acknowledgment afterwards is great."

The judging panel included restaurateur and TV chef Nisha Katona, restaurateur Asma Khan and Just Eat managing director Andrew Kenny.

The awards, now in their sixth year, recognise local takeaways across the UK with winners serving up a diverse range of food from Indian, chicken and burgers to fish and chips, noodles and vegan.
