Name: Nathan Priday
Job Title: Frier/server
At: Fiddlers Elbow Fish & Chips, Leintwardine, Hertfordshire
Nominated by: Dominic Eusden, owner, who says: “Nath has been with us for almost two years and in that time he has grown as a person and in the job. He uses his own initiative, which means we can rest easy knowing that we don't have to continue to ask for jobs to be carried out. In such a short time, we as employers, have faith and trust in Nath that we left him in charge of the shop whilst we went on holiday for three weeks. We encourage any team members to have input in the business and Nath has come up with many great ideas, which include smoked haddock, cheddar and spring onion fishcakes. He has recently introduced our business to YouTube and has created several videos showing what goes on behind the scenes in the fish and chip industry (and most of this has been done in his own time without wanting any wages for it). These are just a few of the things that Nath does for the business and in return we would like him to realise that we appreciate all that he does, not just for us but the business.
How long have you worked at Fiddlers Elbow?
Almost two years now. I began working immediately after the re-fit in February 2017. I have lived in the village all my life and a two-minute walk to work is very pleasing as I know I don't have to travel far!
What are your responsibilities?
Frying and food prep, although I have taken on more responsibility as my experience and knowledge have grown. Being responsible for the upkeep of the shop over three consecutive weeks whilst the owners were on holiday showed my dedication and the trust my employers have in me.
What's your favourite part of the job?
Being on the fryer every night that I work! I enjoy it and I find it so pleasing knowing that the customers are eating the food that I have produced and that the hard work that goes on behind the scenes is worth it. I love chatting and having a laugh with customers also!
What's your least favourite part of the job?
Getting burnt is never fun and always painful, although I have begun to get used to it now!
What is it that you like about working at Fiddlers Elbow?
It’s a challenge and sometimes a mystery - you never know whether the day ahead will be quiet or extremely busy! The staff I work with are fun to be around, but what makes it is seeing the smile on my customers' faces as they walk out the door with the nation’s favourite dish.
How do you feel about being nominated as an unsung hero?
Amazed and very grateful. It makes me feel very appreciated and that the hard work I put in is getting recognised!
