Unsung Hero...
Name: Bernadetta Plesniak
Age: 30
Job title: Assistant manageress
At: Bishopston Fish Bar, Bristol

Nominated by:
Nick Lomvardos, owner, who says: “Bernadetta is easily the best worker I’ve ever come across in the 35 years I’ve been in the fish and chip trade. She doesn’t understand the words “no” or “ can’t do it”. You would think she owns the shop with the amount of work she puts in. The customers absolutely adore her and her smile adds to the brilliant service she provides."
How long have you worked at Bishopston Fish Bar?
I’ve worked at Bishopston Fish Bar for four years now. I came to work here because my neighbour, who also works here wanted to go on a date, so I came to cover for one night. I enjoyed it so much and Nick was so impressed with me that he offered me a few nights’ work at the end of the shift. I’ve been here ever since!
What are your responsibilities?
My main role is serving the customers but I also take care of any new staff we get. I’m told every single new girl loves working with me and that it’s because I’m so relaxed. I just get on with everyone, I think!
What’s your favourite part of the job?
Serving the customers, without a doubt. I take their orders and it’s my mission to make sure each and every customer gets their order quickly and that it’s exactly what they ordered.
What’s your least favourite part of the job?
I really don’t like to skim the oil as I’ve burnt myself too many times so I tend to leave that to Nick or my colleague Sayeed.
What is it that you like about working at Bishopston Fish Bar?
It’s the relationship with Nick and the rest of the team. Nick calls us his family and always speaks in such a lovely manner to us. He protects us and he genuinely looks after us. We are called his “dream team!”
How do you feel about being nominated as an Unsung Hero?
I feel very honoured and proud to find out Nick had nominated. I can’t wait to show my two lovely boys and my husband the article!
