Unsung Hero

Name: Ryan Hughes

Job title: Manager

At: The Crispy Cod, Tonyrefail, Rhondda Cynon Taf

Age: 25

Nominated by Mathew Williams, owner of The Crispy Cod, who says: “Ryan has been with me now since he was 12 years old and has since worked his way through the business to become my right-hand man, and my close friend.

"Ryan has that never say no attitude, he will always attempt any task no matter what and complete it to a high standard. In 2016, Ryan won Drywite’s Young Fish Frier of the Year award, however, this doesn’t even come close to appreciating the work he does for me and the business, he is always the first person into work and the last to leave. He has guided countless members of staff through and has worked wonders for the business, allowing me to focus my attention elsewhere knowing in full confidence that everything is under control.

"I strongly believe I would not be where I am now had it not been for Ryan. I find my self incredibly lucky to have him at my side."

How long have you worked at The Crispy Cod?

I have worked at The Crispy Cod since day one. I worked in a pub for Mathew prior to working at The Crispy Cod and understudied him as he trained me up and pushed me to achieve more.

What are your responsibilities?

I run the Tonyrefail shop, ordering, cashing up, training, hiring, frying, basically anything that happens in a fish and chip shop, I get involved in.

What’s your favourite part of the job?

Seeing happy customers walk out the door and ensuring the best quality product is served every time.

What's your least favourite part of the job?

Sometimes I have to deal with paperwork, meaning I can’t be out on the shop floor interacting with my customers.

What is it that you like about working at The Crispy Cod?

Everything. It feels like a second home to me. I love my regulars, we always have a good chat and get on well, some have been coming in for years now.

How do you feel about being nominated as an unsung hero?

It feels really nice. All I want to do is do my job and help push the business further and to be recognised for this is brilliant.
