Unsung hero...

Name: Simon Vincent Kendra

Job title: Food preparation assistant

At: Smith's Chippy,

Age: 28

Put forward by:

William Smith, owner of Smith's Chippy, who says: "Simon is my prep assistant and a lot of the work he does goes largely unnoticed by the rest of the team. His main job is preparing everything for the day's trade but he works right across the board, making him a very valuable member of my team."

How long have you worked at Smith’s Chippy?

I have worked at Smiths Chippy for the last four years. Previous to this role, I studied hospitality and training while working with travelling showmen in the summer months.

What are your responsibilities?

Over the four years, my role has always been in the food prep area, boning the fish for the day’s trade and prepping and chipping the potatoes. However, more recently, I have also taken on other duties so I am now also responsible for all of the pattie production, cleaning of the frying medium and I also make all of our sauces.

What’s your favourite part of the job?

I love the day-to-day variation in my role. I truly never have any two days that are the same. Granted, I do all the same tasks week in week out, but there are the small differences that keep me motivated and engaged.

What's your least favourite part of the job?

Easy one this! It has to be cleaning the interceptor from the potato peeler! I put it off for as long as I can, but I know it must be done daily.

What is it that you like about working at Smith’s Chippy?

I enjoy the atmosphere and the way we are all working towards giving the customer the best possible product. It is true to say that working in this shop is a team effort.

How do you feel about being nominated as an unsung hero?

This nomination came right out of the blue! I am very thankful for William for nominating me. I just come to work and do my job to the best of my abilities.
