Fish and chip shops that are staying open are being advised to check that their suppliers are still trading after fish supplier Smales announced it was closing as of 5pm today and others restrict their services to click and collect.
On its Facebook page, Smales said: “As many of you are aware, family is at the heart of everything we do here at Smales. We have been a family owned business for over 80 years and are proud to consider both our staff and our many customers part of this family. In these unprecedented times, the safety and security of this extended family must take priority.
“Following new government restrictions broadcast last night, we regret to announce that as of 5pm on Tuesday 24th March 2020, Smales Fish Merchants will be temporarily closing until the country has made sufficient progress in the fight against Covid-19.”
It goes on to advise people to stand in solidarity with the industry and the country and “to stay home, stay safe and look after your loved ones”.
