Wimpy set for a comeback next year

Fast food chain Wimpy is to stage a comeback as it announces plans for expansion and investment.

The details, reported in the Daily Star Online at the weekend, are being kept quiet with a spokesperson only willing to say that plans will be unveiled in early 2018.

Wimpy, which launched its first store in the UK in 1954, dominated high streets with over 500 outlets at its peak. However, with the launch of McDonald’s in the early ‘80s, the chain struggled to compete and the number now stands at just 80.

Known for its burgers, breakfasts and coffee, the chain launched a new menu in July last year, introducing a range of salads and ‘lighter choice’ items.

Wimpy is currently owned by South American-based Famous Brands which bought Gourmet Burger Kitchen last year.
