David Miller and his Haxby team have been hard at work visiting shops and inviting others into theirs in a bid to share expertise and move everyone forward
It’s certainly been a very busy month for us all at Miller’s! We have been travelling all over the UK, have opened our doors to some great industry friends old and new, and we’re celebrating after winning an award that is very close to our hearts.
For my part, I have been really enjoying working in collaboration with the NFFF to get out on the road, visit shops, deliver training and give something back to the industry that has been at the heart of our family for generations. From opening a new shop, W14 in Altrincham, to travelling up to Scotland to roll my sleeves up and get stuck in to help a shop and team who were looking for advice, it’s safe to say that it’s been a truly varied and enjoyable month indeed!
At the beginning of the month, Nick and I travelled to Chelmsley Wood to visit Chelmund’s Fish & Chips. The shop is a little bit special in that it operates as a community project, with all of the profits going back into the local community, which has garnered them some significant attention from the likes of BBC’s The One Show.
Unfortunately, they had hit a bit of a rocky patch when their manager left, so we teamed up with the NFFF to get down to the shop and lend a hand to make sure that they got back on track. I’m delighted to say that we struck up a great relationship with the guys at Chelmund’s and have kept up the contact and support since – Nick and I can’t wait to go back.
Back in May, we hosted our first open day at Miller’s. We were delighted to welcome so many visitors from shops throughout the UK, as well as industry partners, for a day dedicated to sharing advice and information and, most importantly, enjoying a fish and chip lunch!
We have always believed that one of the most important aspects of winning the National Fish and Chip Awards is the commitment that you make to in supporting other shops on their journey to the awards and spreading the word about how amazing our industry truly is – so this day was really important to us.
We were joined on the day by representatives from NEODA, Seafish, Middletons, Kerry Foods and the NFFF, to name but few, so all the shops who attended also had a chance to build their networks and discuss the issues that matter to them with fellow shops and representatives from various industry partner bodies and suppliers. I’m chuffed to say that the feedback we received was great and that we’re looking into running another session later in the year.
Finally, I’m thrilled to announce that Miller’s was named Small Family Business of the Year at the Family Business United Awards in Mayfair earlier this month. Nick and I travelled down to Mayfair to attend the ceremony and we were genuinely shocked when the announcement came as the competition was incredibly strong, from a whole range of sectors.
This award means a great deal as fish and chips has been in the Miller family for over 75 years, so whilst Nick and I picked up the award, it was very much on behalf of the generations who have gone before, and of course our team, who we very much count as our extended family! Suffice to say, the team and our community in Haxby were delighted to hear the news, and we feel very honoured to have received such an accolade.
